Probabilistic Models for Defect Initiated Fracture in Ceramics
نویسندگان
چکیده
Fracture tests on hot-pressed silicon nitride containing voids and sevet·al types of inclusions have been conducted. Fracture models pertinent to each defect type have been proposed and correlated with the data. The specificity of the fracture models is emphasized, and the various trends with defect size that result from the models are described. The resultant fracture probability relations are one of the key inputs to accept/reject decisions for nondestructive failure prediction.

Accept/Reject Criteria for Structural Ceramics: Probablistic Models for Inclusion Initiated Fracture in Ceramics
Fracture tests on hot-pressed silicon nitride containing several types of inclusions have been conducted. Fracture models pertinent to each inclusion type have been proposed and correlated with the data. The resultant fracture probability relations are one of the key inputs to accept/reject decisions for nondestructive failure prediction.
متن کاملAccept-Reject Decisions and Probabilistic Failure Prediction
The purpose of this paper is to discuss recent progress in the development of an NDE decision formalism applied to the case of brittle fracture in ceramics. The on-line input into the formalism is a set of nondestructive (ND) measurements and the on-line output is the probability of failure conditioned on the above measurements. The final accept-reject decision depends only upon the comparison ...
متن کاملEvaluation of Fracture Strength of Ceramics Containing Small Surface Defects Introduced by Focused Ion Beam
The aim of this study was to clarify the effects of micro surface defects introduced by the focused ion beam (FIB) technique on the fracture strength of ceramics. Three-point bending tests on alumina-silicon carbide (Al₂O₃/SiC) ceramic composites containing crack-like surface defects introduced by FIB were carried out. A surface defect with area in the range 19 to 35 µm was introduced at the ce...

The first two articles in this section focus on ferroelectrics. Hoffman and Kungl address connections between composition, processing, microstructure and large strain behavior of lead-based ferroelectrics. Special emphasis is directed towards the effects of additives in PZT ceramics on defect structure and microstructural development. Recent work and future prospects on high temperature ferroel...
متن کاملMicrostructural Alterations in Alumina Ceramics Associated with Ballistic Impact Events
Surface topography and defect structures associated with ballistic impact in a commercial 94 percent alumina ceramic armor are described. Fracture surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy, augmenting previous replication electron fractography studies. Direct transmission electron microscopy was employed in characterizing defect structures in extracted fracture fragments on replica...
